I took this one while I was out in the city with a few photography buddies. I think it was taken just north of Chinatown off of Mulberry.

I put my classic duotone conversion on it just because it looked like it was asking for it. I'm not too happy that the hoodie is cut off, but I always frame tightly, and this time I simply missed. I still need to work on my "quick composition" that is needed when street shooting. I wish I could've got more falloff, but I was already shooting wide open.

C&C is greatly appreciated.

May have been because we were eating ice cream and taking pictures of him.

That's a great shot, Chris.

I don't agree about cutting off the hood. First, if it is cut off, it's a tiny portion of it. Second, it seems as if the angle and the bldg caused it and it ain't no biggie at all.

He tripped on the sidewalk while taking the last pic and it made a nice effect. He wanted to fall off the curb again while taking this one.;)

Thanks Mark. I'm always so obsessed with not cutting things off the frame, and I know many others are too. I've found that it's sometimes best to frame more loosely and crop tightly later rather than frame tightly and risk cutting things off.

David, by more falloff, I mean less depth of field where the wall "falls off" into a more blurred background. Nevertheless, thanks for commenting. :)

You could have applied some gaussian blur to the wall, no?

That's an idea, but it would be a flat blur rather than a progressive depth blur.

Apply a mask and use the gradient tool to mimic the "progressive depth" blur. I tried it - aside from the portion of the photo that's directly in front of him, it worked well. A bit of touching up and it looked fine - a bit dreamy but OK.

ETA: If you angle the gradient you could probably get by without having to touch up the mask...

How can I set the mask containing the gradient to do a gaussian blur?
