Mystery Bird and a Canada Warbler

I am stumped on the first bird...and I am hoping one of the experts here can help identify it. Its on the larger size for warblers.

The second image is a Canada Warbler ( 90 % sure) and its the first time i have managed to photograph one..has some tiny leaf or insect wing in its beak....hoping to get a better one before the warblers are all gone. Both shots were taken a couple of weeks ago at Mud Lake in Ottawa...30D and 400mm F5.6

Nice shots. The first one looks like a bit like a fledging European Robin.

I was thinking the first might be a Willow or Alder Flycatcher based on the bird book I have. Nice shots !

The ID of the first one remains still a mystery for me, but a good find and captured well Gary. The light and the shadows work well with this shot as you can see all the details in the lights and the darks.
The second is a first view for me of the Canada Warbler, lovely colours in this shot, Nice ones, well done.

I'm torn between these two also...Willow a slightly higher percentage of my vote.

Great captures Gary, the flycatchers are so similar to each other, but a wonderful pose and exposure. Well done.

Thanks for the leads and perhaps it is a Wilow or Alder flycatcher. I might send it to an Ottawa Naturalist to see if he has any other thoughts. Thanks for taking the time and thanks for looking and commenting.

Gary, first of all nice shots...especially the Canada Warbler (which I have seen for the first time last week FINALLY). The mystery bird is simply (well sort of simply) a Yellow-Rumped Warbler. Cool perch!

I really like the first shot Gary. From the detail in the bird, to the moss on the tree branch. Very nice captures!

Both fantastic as always Gary but that colour is quite striking on the 2nd capture. Very nice.

Dan, you may be on to something here. I see the resemblance I think.... I was shooting Yellow -Rumped Warblers earlier that morning and they were either Brown or they had some or most of their summer colors so I never thought this was the same bird. I did see some today that looked more similar. I guess its the position of the head as well that is throwing me off. Thanks for the info.

Like your Canada Warbler shot. I was at Britannia Conservation area late yesterday morning and there were LOTS of warblers up on the ridge. Most were Yellow-rumps but some saw Magnolia as well and a few I still haven't identified yet. Gotta look through the Sibleys.

There was even a Hummingbird.....first one I saw all season. It flew in from my right side. At first I thought it was a large insect but something about the flight told me bird. Sure enough, it was a Hummingbird and it was even sticking its tongue out at one point. Saw a Black + White warbler inside the woods right around that kite hanging in the tree. Too bad I didn't check the shutter speed because the shot ended up kind of blurred (would have been even more blurred if not for the IS on the 100-400L IS). The weather wasn't so good early in the morning but I got there late and this influx of warblers happened after 11am. It was pretty darn quiet and suddenly warblers all around. This went on for well over an hour.

Which naturalist are you referring to...Bruce or Tony?
