Like your Canada Warbler shot. I was at Britannia Conservation area late yesterday morning and there were LOTS of warblers up on the ridge. Most were Yellow-rumps but some saw Magnolia as well and a few I still haven't identified yet. Gotta look through the Sibleys.

There was even a Hummingbird.....first one I saw all season. It flew in from my right side. At first I thought it was a large insect but something about the flight told me bird. Sure enough, it was a Hummingbird and it was even sticking its tongue out at one point. Saw a Black + White warbler inside the woods right around that kite hanging in the tree. Too bad I didn't check the shutter speed because the shot ended up kind of blurred (would have been even more blurred if not for the IS on the 100-400L IS). The weather wasn't so good early in the morning but I got there late and this influx of warblers happened after 11am. It was pretty darn quiet and suddenly warblers all around. This went on for well over an hour.

Which naturalist are you referring to...Bruce or Tony?

I was there again today and the Yellow-Rumped warblers were everywhere. I also saw a Nashville and I got some shots of what I believ is a female Blackburnian Warbler. It matches in a few of my books perfectly. I saw Black and Whites a couple of weeks ago on the ridge but no luck photographing them. I also saw a White Throated Sparrow on the ridge this morning as well as the tamest Catbird I have ever seen...several other warblers as well that I can't identify...yet.

The naturalist I was referring to is Tony. I have sent shots to Elizabeth for identification and she has passed them on to Tony in a couple of cases. He confirmed the Juvie Virginia Rail for me. One of the guys at work is very knowledgeable as well and he is a friend of Bruce's..academic now as Dan id probably right..BTW...nice photo in the Ottawa Citizen yesterday. I bet you have a lot of great shots from that trip:D

Thanks Joe:D :D

Sounds like the morning is the time to go to Britannia. Went there late this afternoon and it was quiet....zilch. Hey, cool catch on the Blackburnian. Have you posted any photos of it yet? Speaking of Catbird.....I heard one but didn't see it.

Heheheheh :-) Same has happened to me. Elizabeth sent an email I sent her to Tony as well. And he was very helpful. I can tell you one thing, Tony is a great guy to go bird with. I've run into him a few times while out taking photos. Very enthusiastic, friendly and knowlegeable. A generous guy too. I had planned to go with his group on a night owling excursion but couldn't make it. He offered to take me owling a few days later, just him and I. Unfortunately, I couldn't take up his offer due to work the next day (I forget what the reason was now).

In addition to being a naturalist and birder, Tony is also an accomplished photographer with photos in various books and magazines. I think we who enjoy photographing birds would enjoy his birding trips from an educational standpoint and also expand our horizons on places to photograph in and near Ottawa. His website is at: www3.sympatico.ca/beck.tony (external link)

Thanks for the comment Gary on the Citizen photo. Actually it was one from last years trip. I sent in a few pics from this summer's trip to Ile Bonaventure but no idea why they didn't use those instead. Moreso than the picture taking is the unforgettable experience of seeing all those birds together like that. Thousands of them. Families of gannet are literally seperated by only a few feet of space. When one of the adult Gannet birds returns from flying or fishing for food it has to land in that small space which inevitably leads to much sqawking from neighbouring families of gannets.

Congratulations on your fine photo of a hummingbird feeding in last week's Citizen. I think I may have seen it posted here as well.

Nice captures, Gary. I would tend to see #1 as a flycatcher of some kind, not a warbler. But I've been completely wrong once or twice in the past. ;-)a
In any case, #2 is a bird I've never seen but would like to. Great color and very sharp image. And, being a warbler, it probably wasn't all that cooperative in having it's picture taken. Nice job.

Both are excellent captures Gary. #1 looks like a juvee warbler but not sure which kind. Well, looks who's talking here. I can't even ID a mature warbler.

Thanks to canondslruser for the info and link. Thanks also to Ron. Fee and Wayne for taking the time to comment. And thanks to David at work, our resident expert for confirming to Ted that Dan is correct in his id ( never doubted it ). And finally thanks to anyone else who looks and commnets as its time for this one to migrate out of here.;)
