Heres a humming bird that started visiting my feeder finally. This was shot with a Canon 100-400mm L IS lens rented from www.rentcameragear.com (external link). The lighting is poor because it was right as the sunset on a a cloudy day. Im hoping to get more on a better lit day.
If you want to try out a lens before buying, or need a lens for a vacation Kevin has great prices and their service is awesome.

Oh, this is exactly what I needed to see: hummingbird pics shot with this lens (I'm considering it too, in part for hummers). How much of a crop are these pics and were you happy with the lens's performance (AF)?

You captured the hummers well considering the low light, I hope you get a chance to shoot more in better light soon :)

It was DARK out... sun was down and cloudy. I got off 81 images in under 4 minutes while she was hovering around. The settings were ISO 800, 1/320 sec. f6.3 around 300-400mm range. There isnt much crop on the images, just to make them an 8x10 file size (basically cutting off the right couple inches of the frame).
I love this lens and is on the top of my list to buy. Its a very fast focusing lens for the f-stop size and the IS is amazing on the longer focal ranges. I have the 28-135mm IS and thought it added some help but compared to the 100-400 range the IS is a must have for hand holding. I have a post on here of some wooducks using this lens also.
