Part of the outrageous price of the L lenses (well, at times) is that one basically pays for a lens that shines from wide open...
I have always felt that I can stop any lens down and enhance its performance, even the 18-55 can be awesome at f/8-f/11 (been there, done it, and I STILL like the results even after being spoiled by all the good stuff), but a lens that one can shoot wide open and still trust to deliver the goods.....now that is awesome.
Things like the 60 macro at f/2.8....absolutely NO hesitation to use it wide open.
My 300 f/4L is nice and sharp at f/4, and ULTRAsharp at f/4.5. The 300 f/2.8.. I don't like to think

Yeah, I'm going to have to click off the forum for tonight...every time I think "I'll JUST BUY IT" I think "I don't THINK it's worth a divorce...."
Time to go think about something besides L primes!
