i'm not sure what the 1:4 is supposed to be as i've seen some lenses with that. Here are 3 lenses that i'm considering, i have the canon 20D.
doing superbike races.

Canon Lens EF 300mm 1:4 L Is

CANON EF 28-300mm 3.5-5.6L IS USM

Canon EF 300mm F4.0L IS USM

the 2.8 is out of my price range, and i'm not sure that one stop will make that much difference..or i could be wrong. lol

I just used the 70-200mm 2.8 L IS and its great but too short.

1:4 is the same as F4. the 300 F4L IS is a great lens no doubt. what do you plan on shooting?

I'm going to guess superbike races. ;)
From all accounts the 300 looks like a stellar lens. You could try adding a Teleconverter to your 70-200 for now?

what about the 400mm f5.6L USM EF Lens ?
canada camera has it on sale,
http://www.cameracanada.com …/product.asp?pid=2526A004 (external link)

what about the CANON EF 28-300mm 3.5-5.6L IS USM. That isnt as good as the straight 300 f4L Is?

* i rented the 200mm to test it out.

* I Just realized that any lens that is one nubmer is a fixed lens. Like the 300 or whatever. Wow, how embarrasing.

Im not sure how i feel just having fixed lens, need zoom.

i love the 400 5.6 for birding, but i dont know how well it would suit you for motorsports. I second taking a look at the 100-300 F4 Sigma. should be great for you aswell

if the fstop says lets say "3.5-5.6L" does that mean that u can only get from 3.5 to 5.6, and nothing above?

it means at the wide end (100mm) you will get 4.5 maximum aperture. and at the tele end (400mm) you will get a max of 5.6. of course you can stil stop down further.

thanks for the clarification Billginthekeys! Learning from all you guys, so much help!

so far i've learned that i will need a telephoto zoom lens and not a static lens. Now i have to research as to waht i want. the sigma 100-400 has a fair price tag, not sure yet how fast it is or what. Time for search funcion
