fstops are expensive, lol. Or is there somthign else thats differnt between those 2 l series lenses?

As lenses get faster (larger maximum apertures) they physically contain more glass, need more design corrections, and correspondingly become more expensive. Also, as you reach the extreme ends of wide angle and telephoto, they become more expensive as well.

Man, does this sound like an opportunity for the TOKINA AF 80-400mm f/4-5.6 ATX

This baby is not nearly as expensive as any of the Canon's, but can deliver the goods for around $498.00. It may not have IS, but I would give it a good look before you go buying into 300mm or the 100-400mm. If you use a good monopod, IS is pointless, anyway.

If I hadn't sunk $1700 into the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM and another $900 into the TAmROn SP AF 200-500mm f/5-6.3 Di LD lenses... this would be the one I'd have. A lot smaller and weighs a carload less. I wish they made it in a SONY/Minolta mount... but it's just Canon and Nikon mounts, right now.

Use the money you'd save on some other nice glass. Just a suggestion... ;)

Check outTHIS LINKthat has been running, recently. It has some nice comparisons in it. Well worth the look, for that kind of savings.
