Excuse my ignorance, I haven't been a Canon Man all that long, but is that non-DO an old lens? I've never seen one listed.

What a pity - I think I'd have gone for one of those!

Diffractive Optics, minimal positive affect on image quality, huge affect on the size of a lens.

In short it's a way of designing lenses so that they are a lot shorter and lighter than lenses of equal focal lengh using traditional methods of construction.

It's also said to solve other problems found with traditional lens making methods.

For the price or the 400 DO, I'd get a 300 F/2.8L IS and 1.4x converter. Same size, alot less money and better reviews

Actually, the 400 DO is 4.3 lbs, and the 300 f/2.8 L IS is 6 lbs without the TC, so the 400 is much lighter. As far as sharpness, I have used the 300 with a TC and it's phenomenal and I don't know how the 400 DO compares.

Here is a review by the Birdmaster, Arthur Morris http://www.naturescapes.net/082006/am0806.htm (external link)
he sure likes the lens.
