Really? Ok well post some sample pictures when you get it because I have never really seen anything from this long lens. (and the archive could use a 400mm f5.6 thread also)

if it is for flying birds go with the 400 5.6. cant be beat.

if its for versitility than go for the 100-400. but at the same time if stuff get close enough for you to need under 300 u can use the 70-200.

This sums up the dilemna nicely. Keep in mind the 300mm primes AF will trackj birds in flight jsut as well as the 400mm. (if not better) and it's one of the only lenses that will. But it;s not quite so "pointable" :)

You made a good choice.

With a 300 f/2.8 IS and 1.4 times teleconverter the 400 f/5.6 does not give you anything except that it is more compact to carry around. If you want to shoot flying birds you can hand hold the 300/2.8 until your arms get tired or invest in a Wimberly head for your tripod that is designed for the purpose.

The 100-400 gives you a great compact lens that can be used for many purposes, including hand held shooting. It gives you a great deal of flexibility if you mount it on your second body and is very useful if you need to pack your camera and don't want to take weight of the 300/2.8.
