 Hi everybody!
I`m new member (new photographer) and from sweden(bad in english).
I have just found out how great it is to take picture white a digital camera. A new world for me, fells like I am newborn.
I have bought a Canon 20D with the 18-55 kit, so far I was satisfied until I tried to take picture when my son played fotball.
I need a zoom lens that cover the whole field.
Is there someone that have knowledge of what lens/es I need?
Type, brand, aparture ,,,,,,,
Lenses are fairly expensive in sweden but the money I can afford is around 700 us. dollar, is that 400 pounds? he, he!
What do I need to think about when I take that type of picture conserning settings etc.?
I am greatful if someone could help me with this!

I would look at the Canon 70-200 f 4.0 L, it's a really nice lens for the price.
The Sigma 100-300 f4.0 is a nice lens and gives you more reach, and you might be able to get a good used one for under $700.

Welcome to POTN.

sigma 70-200 EX, it's f2.8 and if wide open allow for twice the shutter speed of the Canon 70-200 f4.

The Canon 70-200 f/4L if you want something small and light, or the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8L if size/weight isn't a problem for you.

I will thank you all for helping me, I think it will be the Canon 70-200 f/4L. As Bob_A said, small and light.
I saw in cjm`s website that you have one, nice site by the way! What make you to choose that one?
I have reed that the kit lense 17-55 is really bad, I don`t have the knowledge to tell..
Can you you recommend a good lence below that range aswell?
Do I need a zoom or is it better to have a "fixed" one?
I would like to take interior picture is the Sigma EX 10-20/4,0-5,6 DC HSM and/or the Canon EF-S 10-22/3,5-4,5 USM a good deal?
I thank you all for taking the time to help a new one like me!
Roger

I'd suggest taking a little more time before investing in expensive lenses, even the 'budget L' lens 70-200 f/4 is still pretty much right at your budget anyway.

the kit lens 18-55mm is reasonable to start with, especially to learn the camera with. but as you have found out, you need a bit more reach for soccer games, so i'd suggest getting the sigma 70-300mm APO macro lens - a very versatile telephoto zoom that also has a close-up facility. you will need some sort of support for this to minimise camera shake, and I'd suggest a monopod for portability.

Leave the expensive lenses for a while - it's better to learn how to use the camera first, and use this experience to help you choose future lens purchases.

check out The Digital Picture (external link) for a general education nabout Canon lenses.

But don't be in a hurry to write off the kit lens. Used at f/5.6-8 or so it is plenty sharp enough.

Canon 6D
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 , Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro
CanonEF 17-40 f/4 L Canon EF 24-70 f/4 IS L and 70-200 f/4 L :D
Speedlite 580EX and some bags'n pods'n stuff
