I ordered a UV filter 52 mm Hoya for my PS S 2IS and I was ok with getting the metal ring cover off the camera, but there is a plastic ring that doesn't seem to want to come off for screwing on the UV filter. Help would be appreciated.

have you bought the adaptor ring? its a 2" long peice of metal/plastic that goes on the front of the camera and then the filter attaches to that

Kit List:

Canon S2IS, Lowepro Bag, Some AA 2100Mamp batteries loads of SD cards, ploarising filter, tripod, case of beer

No, I went on-line to Lensmate and found the UV, but didn't realize there is an adapter ring as well. It must be 52 mm as well?

Yes - as it's what you thread the filter onto it needs to be the same thread diameter as the filter.
