Did a search but only came up with a Pro 1 vs G6.
Does anyone have a good side-by side comparison of shots taken with both cameras?
I really wanted the Pro 1 all along, but you can get a new S3 IS for $100 less than a used Pro 1. But does the IS, good movie mode, longer zoom, etc. of the S3 justify not getting the Pro 1's battery & charger, 28mm wide lens and others?

I have the pro 1 and a friend just purchased the s3. The specs can tell you what you need to know.. I wanted raw, CF card, and 511 battery compatability and was able to get the pro 1 on ebay for under $450 (including shipping). The images are comparable in quality (same digic II) and the lenses each have their strengths. I personally like the feel of the pro 1, but yearn for the lens (ironic) of the S3- especially since the lens on the pro1 gets rediculously long on zoom. The s3 does some internal moving to limit the physical length of the lens. nice.
There are plenty of shots (dpreview.com, steves-digicams.com) where you can compare, but it comes down to which specs you need.

happy hunting

I also want RAW, CF, 511, shoe mount, and 28mm wide. The Pro 1 only has digic 1 so I'm guessing the S3 has a better hi ISO quality. Dpreview shows the Pro 1 vs a 300D (which goes against an earlier thread of a 350D blowing away the quality of his Pro 1). I should check Steves though, thanks. Was really hoping someone had a side-by-side of the 2, even though now the G7 muddies things up more.

those sites may not directly compare, but they have the same test shots and you can load up each in a separate browser and check with your own eye which you prefer... Those two are indispensable when checking out the quality of shots you will get.

Yeah I can't seem to understand, the s3 is significantly cheaper than the g7 will be, but isnt the s3 better zoom and similar image quality. I guess digic III is what you're paying for.

There is no right answer to this question. It completely depends on your needs. Do you want a flash hotshoe? If so, the S3 is out. Do you need Image Stabilization? Then the Pro1 is out. Do you need a LONG zoom? Then the S3 is your answer. Do you want a flip LCD? Then no G7 for you...

That's a loaded question. Each one has positives and negatives.
I purchased an S2 because I was looking for something fairly compact with a great zoom range image stabilization and the bonus of a great movie mode. I held off purchase on this camera because I didn't like SD vs CF. Digic II. I wish it went wider, lens was faster, had a hot shoe, and had RAW.
The G7 is kind of a pseudo G series. It retains the G name and the basic shape of the body is the same, and it retains the hot shoe, but it loses the bp 511 battery, flip screen, and RAW. Digic III. I like the adddition of IS and I do like the extended range of the lens, but that comes at the cost of lens speed, it's still no slouch there though.
The Pro 1 offers a pro lens(L) that is fast, with a decent range, but it's fairly large in size, especially when racked out. I like that it has RAW, Flip screen, uses CF cards, hot shoe, and BP-511 battery. Digic I. It's a little bulkier than the others, it uses old technology, and with that the high ISO performance suffers.
Which one is better, I don't know. I ended up with the S2 for the reasons stated above. My perfect camera would combine all three. The wide angle and L lens of the pro 1, the speed of the pro 1's lens, the length of the S2/3, RAW, Digic II or III, Flip Screen, BP-511, CF, in other words I want it all.

They all have their pros & cons: I have always been leaning towards the Pro 1 for its 28mm wide lens, 8MP; but cons are slow start-up and write times. The S3 has IS, Digic II and good movie mode; but SD card, 36mm, and no rechargeable battery. G7 is much of the S3 but no swivel screen.

I guess I was secretly waiting for the Pro 2.... I too want it all.

now, if the s3 has a swivel screen, I think it's probably the most versatile of the three, or does it not have a swivel?

S3 uses AA batteries. And it eats them too. Get some rechargible's and you're set.
