The Tamron 28-75 2.8 makes me smile every time I use it...

This is nothing... have you seen the "-=Top ten=- Wildlife zooms" poll?

It's an absolute slaughter!

One lens (you'll have to see the poll) ;) gets more votes than all the others combined!

The good old 100-400L wins in a landslide :D

Voted for 24-105 f/4L - that's because I have a 5D. If one thinks 24mm is wide on a crop camera.. well, nothing I will say will disabuse them of that notion, but that sure as heck ain't wide in my book. Keep drinking the kool-aid...

So what do I use on a crop camera? 17-85, of course. Now that is wide (not ULTRA wide) enough for me. :)

Saw a suggestion in another thread to get 24-70 plus some fast primes. Actually, I would have thought it would be get 24-105 and fast primes, because then you have a slow-but-IS lens, and the fast primes are well, like, fast. ;)

I personally find the 24-70 is useful if you do a lot of flash work. I find I depend a whole lot less on the IS when using flash, it would only come into play when I drag the shutter, otherwise I tend to sync at 1/200, or I could go as low as 1/100 and still come out ahead. The one stop makes a BIG difference with flash (how much ambient you can get into the image, in particular), and will reduce the need to drag. But as a walkaround, I like something lighter, IS equipped, and stuff like that.

Added Other as there seem to be quite a few lenses mentioned that aren't on the poll.

I technically have two walk around lenses.....

24-105L which is the one I voted for. Easy to carry... IS... focal range.. all lend itself to a great all around walk around lens.

but.. I do carry a my rather old.... but nice... 35-105 Tamron f2.8. usually attached to my secondary Elan IIe.

If I need something faster ( like many of the 24-70 owners boast about ) I carry a set of primes which cover a bit more range and nothing is slower than f2.

I think sometimes when we say we NEED 2.8 it means that it is super nice to have. (We need some excuse to support the L addiction)

I voted 24-105 but, from now on, indoor I will use the 16-35 I've recently bought.

It's the 24-105 f4L IS for me too. Last year I would have voted for 28-70 f2.8L, but since acquiring the 24-105, I find it's the one I use most for general shooting, i.e. my walk-around lens.

I walk about with three lenses. A 10-22, 24-105 and 135mm/1.4x/2x.

The joy of a dslr is having the ability to pick a lens to suit the shot whilst having the best possible quality. The body and grip are pretty big, so the lenses are a minor inconvenience.

My personal favourite type of shooting is candid people shots. The 135 is a lens par excellence for that as it's discreet and gets me far enough out of the way to ensure I am not noticed. If my thing was architecture, then the 10-22 would fit the bill. I actually find the 24-105 is my least used lens these days.

24-105L still way out in front. I am surprised at the number of 17-40L votes for walk around lens there are

there is no way i can vote in this poll. i am using the 17-40 most of the time but i am considering buying the 24-70 because i think that i would love the range. also, i used to use the 70-200 F4 for walk around and also loved it...

Well it looks like we have a clear winner

Take a bow Mr 24-105 f/4L IS :)

Second by a wisker - 24-70/f2 L

Joint 3rd 17-14 f/4 L and 17-85 f/4.5-5.6 IS EF-S

It was interesting to see that some use the 70-200 range is their walk around
