yeah i have been wanting something with more reach then my 300 for a while because it is very hard to get the bird to cooperate or just isnt possible to get close to...although it has been fun chasing or slowly stalking it. i wouldnt need to get as close with a stronger lense...
and yes my main focus is on birds and wildlife

The 400 f/5.6L? The quality of glass 400 f/5.6L is among Canon's best.
This was taken handheld from about ten feet away (right at the minimum focus distance of the 400 f/5.6L):

The first shot was taken from this improvised 'bird blind':

This is a crop from a shot from the 400 f/5.6L. The observatory is well over a mile from where the shot was taken:

This was taken from the same spot as the previous picture, but I used the 17-55 f/2.8 IS instead:

PS: The sky is smokey and orange due to forest fires burning nearby.
Canon 20D w/grip, 300D, Powershot SX100 w/HF-DC1 flash, Canon 70-200 f/2.8L, 85 f/1.8, 17-55 f/2.8 IS, 50 f/1.8, 580EX and some other stuff...
