Why do they care?

Most of the "great whites" have fluorite elements.

This doesn't sound good at all. Many L Lenses have a flourite element. Me thinks, its were that contrasty/creamy picture comes from. But the question sounds like someone is fishing to snatch a lens from you.

Are there others with this experience. Where's Paul Buceta when you need him. He travels. Maybe PM him to see what he says.

Maybe they discovered that if you mix fluorite with some other common component, it can be made into a bomb. . .

Had a look and the 400 f4 DO IS does have fluorite in it

see here 400 f4 DO IS (external link)

the reason that you probably didnt find it in a search is that its spelt fl-uo-rite not "ou" which is a much more common vowel pairing in english.

hope that helps

The tissue was probably a swab for explosive residues... but I'm not familiar with any explosive that uses fluorite.

That would be in the new Dell DSLR, soon to be released, instead of exploding batteries, it has exploding lenses.

They are looking for the Fluoritroglycerine L bombs that were smuggled out of Russia after the end of the cold war. They used very slim white or cream colored propane tanks and had a red ring around the top end to indicate a Live round hence the L nomenclature. :p

Well I was kidding when I mentioned the bomb, but I googled "fluorite explosive", and there were some technical papers about the explosive properties of FLUORINE, which is a gas given off by fluorite crystals.

http://www.lateralscience.co.uk/Fluorine/Fluorine.html (external link)
I don't think there is much chance of a camera lens giving off enough fluorine to combine with hydrogen and become an explosive device, but according to the above article the fluorine/hydrogen combination is deadly.

Okay, first no more lead in the glass, is fluorite next?

Have Fun,

Rick

Well, if you want to go to that extreme, you can blow the hell out of something with simple flour if you can disperse it into a fine enough dust.
