ask your friend to check out the 369$ Sigma 30/1.4 EX (price at www.sigma4less.com (external link), otherwise around $430):

I guess the corresponding Nikon 35/1.4 will be a tad more expensive - the corresponding Canon 35/1.4L is 1200$, and it measures up very well to that one as far as image quality is concerned.

As to the effects of the crop factor ... I find this explanation very informative and helpful:
