So I came across somebody selling the Sigma 70-200 2.8 EX, non-DG in great condition for a great price. I'm semi new to DSLR photography and I'm wondering what will be the draw backs of getting non-DG lenses, or even Tamron's non-DI lenses. TIA

The draw back to non-DG lens is the chip maybe outdated and it'll report wrong EXIF info to the camera. It'll work fine but the focal length is wrong.

I have the same 70-200 non-DG lens and that what it does. I'm about to send it to Sigma to have it "rechip".

Beside that, DG suppose to help with some ghosting and glares.

Image quality is pretty much the same.

I had a non-DG Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 but didn't have any problems on a 20D or 30D.

... You miss out on the latest marketing bull**** from sigma and Tamron.

Seriously, those lenses claim to have improved coatings to reduce reflections of the sensor, but I have yet to see a comparison test that really shows this.

Best regards,
Andy

i have the DG macro version, but also notice there are non DG, AND non MACRO version. My understanding is that the non-DG MACRO versions are new, whereas the non MACRO versions (DG or no DG) are the older ones.

whats the difference? I have not idea :D

Are you able to test the lens on your body to ensure there is no need to rechip?
I have owned a NON DG and 2 x DGs.
Just so happened that my NON DG was the best (sharpest wide open).

I would not hesitate to get a NON DG , assuming it will work on your camera :)

I have a non-DG version. OK EXIF info is incorrect but it doesn't bother me too much. Images are nice and sharp, that's what counts.

Thanks for all the responses! Oh and it'd be on a Rebel XT. I didnt get the chance to test it out on my camera, since I didnt have my camera with me. But I can easily meet up with the seller to test out the lens with my camera. If its just EXIF info thats going to be the biggest issue that wouldnt quite bother me much.

Also to make sure, would you consider $500 a good price for this lens in what I would consider 9/10 condition but missing the lens hood(which I'm pretty sure I can order through the local Sigma dealer?).

That's a pretty good price. You're not happen to see it on Craigslist in SF area did you? :)

I saw a non-DG advertised for the same price without the hood.

It's a good deal regardless.
