It varies from gym to gym. I would use 3200 iso and the highest aperature you can with that lens. Use 1/225-1/325 for shutter speeds
. Your best bet is to get the canon 50mm f/1.8 or canon 85mm f/1.8

canon weight ;)

I just dont like basketball pictures with flash....but thats just me...

One thing I see right off is that they are not verticle..the floor is falling away in some of them.

I do like the "stop action" and the crops for the most part...

while the 28-300 is a great lens for something, low light photography is not one of them. If you can get a fast prime like a 85mm f/1.8 or the 1.2L, or the 135 f/2L, they would be much better suited for that kind of photography

I'm also surprised they let you use flash, most gyms don't

If you want to use on camera flash, I would get as close as possible to maximize flash ouput

maybe when Dell finaly ships my 70-200 2.8 IS, that I was supposed to get on the 8th, I can get rid of the flash. Thank you for your input.

The shots are pretty small... so it's hard to say. But from what I can see, it looks like the flash was working pretty good for you. If you could post larger examples, that would be great. There are all kinds of ways to soften the flash, and the lens you are using has a very usable range. It just isn't commonly used because in many plances flashes are not allowed. But if it is .... no reason to stop. Being able to go wide under the basket is awsome... the range of your lens is not an issue. Post some larger examples and we can go from there.

I found quite a bit of success with the 85mm 1.8 and the 50mm 1.4 during the hoop season last year. The 70-200mm 2.8 also works great. Even with these lenses, sometimes I will bounce the 580 of the ceiling or nearby wall to cut down on direct flash at players.
