If you had to choose, which would you choose?

The two lenses are really differnt, believe it or not. The Sigma is basically a sports lens. It's fast and really heavy. The Canon doesn't have the reach but it's range is more versatile for most events.

The 120-300 is quite versatile.. You have either

A) A lens, capable of sharp shots of anything
B) Home Gym Weights.. :p

I've got both although my 70-200 is the non IS version, they're both really good but the Sigma is pretty heavy :)

It's not a good question unless accompanied by usage. If you said which is preffered for football. or which is preffered for indoor theater ect. I have the sigma 120-300 and I have a 70-200 (sigma) I hardly use the 70-200 and even if it was a canon L lens I probably would still use the sigma 120-300 for football (soccer).

So your question really depends on what the lens is to be used for IMHO :)

PS . I always use a monopod at football. Do people use the sigma 120-300 hand held.. I ahve never tried TBH .. do you ?

Slightly veering off the original subject matter, however, Kipax, how do you find the Autofocus performance on the Sigma 120-300 for football?

Thanks

Paul

When deciding on the two lenses I would say your question is on topic :) I have no problem.. But I have never had a canon lens so I can't campare.. I have always had sigma (A poor hobbyist just starting to get paid regular) . I ahve been told the focus ring is tight and too many turns from 120 to the 300.. But it sll seems good to me.. I dont miss anything through not being focused other than me missing the subject . If I had a canon lens to compare then I might be slating the sigma.. but as it is.. I think it's all round great and no problems.

Well, for sports the IS version is really unneccessary for you need higher shutter speeds to stop the action anyway, so you pretty much take the benefit of IS out of the equation.

I have both lenses and they have their own uses. I use the 120-300 for all outside field events (soccer, football, lacrosse, baseball, etc.) and I use my 70-200 mostly for wrestling, swimming and if the lighting is good, volleyball. Personally I use my Sigma 120-300 much more than the 70-200, but your situation may be different.

You need to let us know what you will be using it for?

if you need the 112 to 320 equivalent, go 70-200, if you need the 192 to 480 equivalent, go for the 120-300. 70-200 will be cheaper, and that's another thing to keep in mind

Well, I own neither so my opinion may not be wanted, but the Sigma is my number 1 dream lens. I have used (rented) a copy of the Canon, but have never even seen the Sigma in person.

Of course, I would love to own either!:D

I had both, sold the Sigma. Of course, I also got the Canon 300/2.8 and don't do a lot of sports.
