What % of full value would you pay for a used L lens? We will assume the lens is 3-4 years old and in very good condition. Would you pay 70%, 80%, 90%? Would it make a difference if it was a zoom lens or a prime? Or would it make a difference if it had IS

80% maybe. you can buy a like-new L lens that still has some warranty for 90% of the going rate.

As little as possible - depends upon condition and the laws of supply and demand

I've never bought a new L lens. Even if it's just 10-20% off the new price, the amount saved is considerable. This means that if something goes wrong with a lens that I bought used, I will have saved up enough money that I can still be ahead after paying the repair bill. My latest L acquisition, the 24-105L, has a strange flare issue (it's a post-recall lens). The seller was very nice and I trust that he didn't know about this before selling it to me but anyway, I took it to Canon and they offered to fix it for free under warranty even though I didn't have a receipt or anything.

I would pay 90% including shipping and insurance, if it was in mint condition ie original packaging, not a mark on it, as if brand new. I would also need reassurance that the seller was on the level, and some kind of 'return if not delighted' clause.

If it wasn't in perfect mint, as-new condition - I wouldn't buy it period. I'm fussy that way, I like new things to be perfect.

come to think of it, I'd rather just buy new. that's probably why this years lens budget is totalled, but there you go.

About 80% seems to be the going rate. I just paid $930USD for a nice 400 f/5.6L including shipping. It sells new for about $1100.

I sold my 70-200 f/4L for 80% of what I paid for it and the same for the tripod collar and a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 XR Di.

It is one sweet lens!

thats understandable. but buying used in the USA can save you even more ;)

I don't buy over a year old anymore so I have a warranty and if it's within $100 I might as well buy new. ;)

I've paid as much as $1000 for a used L lens. That is pretty much the most I will ever pay to a stranger that I can not meet in person.

I recently (fairly recently) paid 1200 canadian for a 24-70L which here in Canada is 1400+tax = 1600.00 It's a few years old but is PERFECT. I got to go to his apartment and put it on my camera and test it out first.

I could have ordered from BHPhoto for 1150ish us dollars but would have been hit with tax and maybe duty and maybe customs brokerage fees plus shipping.

I think I got a good deal.

Plus the 24-105 is only f4... the 2.8 on the 24-70 makes a big difference.

I've bought a couple of used L lens, and have been happy with them. They were both about a year old and LNIB condition, and I talked to the sellers and checked their feedback. Generally, I found that they took really good care of the lens, just as I do.

If the price is right I'd buy used again, if it's only $100 difference on a $1,000 + lens I'd buy new.

I don't think I'd buy a used camera though.

I have many L lenses and only one (1) was purchased new. If someone wants to buy a lens, take good care of it and sell it later on at a discount, I'll gladly take it off their hands. I've saved 10-20% off off web pricing at authorized Canon dealers. Two of my lenses were manufactured in the early 90's are in incredible condition. I would swear that they were in a closet the whole time.
