Naw, I still think the 85mm f/1.2 is the beast LOL :) It's going to be a competition between the two for sure hehe ;)

Yup here is a review. Its a over priced not worth its price unless you're super rich so stick with your f1.4 lens. Bare in mind I have never used it or even seen one in person so my review might just be a tad off.

Its probably a good lens for very select type shooting much like the the 50mm f1. I'll never find out though because I don't even use my Plastic 50 so this would be a waste of money for me.

No serious reviews yet, but when there are, I suspect that it'll go something like this:

1/3 or 1/2 stop faster than the f/1.4
A bit sharper wide open at f/1.2 than the f/1.4
Less distortion than the f/1.4
A bit better color depth and contrast than the f/1.4
Sturdier build than the f/1.4
5 times the price of the f/1.4

Several differences will be subtle. If those are important to you, then you'll want to drop $1600 down on the 1.2L. If you're patient, you'll wait several months and drop something closer to $1350 on the same lens.

1- This lens is MSRPd so far at $1500 !!!!
2- The 50mm does not have that much glass (unless it would be IS). So L does not mean much, rather than an extra coating on the usual glass, and a red line.

I agree with those who would rather spend on something else. I personally would get the 1.4 and be happy with it.

I do not know of anyone who's ever come to me and said "This 50mm 1.4 is too fast, I wish I could get it in f/1.2 ..."

Ok, that was out of topic. Saw a couple of Canon sample pics, and the focal area is so thin, that unless you are paying attention, 95% of the photo looks blurry at 1.2. No other reviews yet. Will keep an eye out.

Cheers though,

For a 1.6 crop camera user, its actually a more useful focal length than the 85 1.2, which is extremely useful when you get to use its actual focal length.

I'm expecting this to be a really top performer. It looks very much like a shorter version of the excellent 85mm f/1.2. If it uses the same optical design then it's sure to be a winner for all those that can justify the price.

I'm wondering why, in the review, TDP.com reviewer didn't mention the 50mm f/1L USM lens. It's existing, it's similar to the 50 1.2L, but not in production. I'm wondering if 50 1.2L will kick the 1L's a** in image quality.

I think the 50f/1.0 would be a very poor standard of comparison here.....according to W. Castleman (?) even the $74 lens 50 f/1.8 can kick the 50 f/1.0 a** in image quality.

If the new lens IQ is more like 85L it will probably sell good.
If it's more like 50 f/1.0 then many people will decide not to pay that much money for a soft low light lens.

Don't forget, this new lens will also be dust and weather sealed like all the other newer L lenses, and will likely have distance information for better flash pictures as well.

A solid, bright, dependable 50mm? Hopefully with a decent enough AF speed... Sounds good to me.

Nobody pays MSRP - let's keep our fingers crossed that the street price is much more reasonable. Not that it'll be cheap, but...

Worse comes to worse, get the 35mm L - that's a fantastic lens.
