I have a fairly small collection of lenses, and i'm looking to add another. I'm thinking the 50mm 1.8. I'm shooting with a 10D (for now, but plans to upgrade in the distant future) and i'm doing some portait shots, sports, and nature. I have my first two "real"jobs coming up, one is a mountain biking event which i figure i'll be using the 70-200 most of the time, and the other is portraits of a 2 year old boy in the park for his mother. This one has the oppertunity to open up others, so thats the one i'm most worried about. it was supposed to be today, but because of weather, its next week.

Looking at my aresenal, and keeping in mind i'm poor, would the 50mm 1.8 be the best addition at this time?

Thanks!

I've only heard good things about this lens, its sharp, light, durable, great DOF, etc. why is it so cheap?

The 50 1.8 is a super lens for the cash.. For the price and quality, every photographer shooting Canon should have this lens in their bag....

If it was me I would ditch the sigma 28-70 and the quanti-poo on ebay add the 80 buck you were going to spen on the 50mm and get a better standard zoom like the sigma 24-70EX ir the tamron 28-75 XR DI.

60D, Canon 18-135 IS, Sigma 10-20 hsm, 24-70 2.8 hsm, 70-200 2.8 hsm, 430EX II, and all the other stuff that goes along with it.

Well ya see..... I won't get much for the two of them. The Sigma is only worth like $40-$50, and the Quanti-Poo is kinda broken ;)

I had a tragic incident where my camera dropped off the coffee table, landed, of course, lens first, and broke one of the screw mounts. the nice metal mount is screwed into a piece of plastic  I superglued it back, but its worked its way loose again. I could not sell that lens with a good concience.

The 50mm will be a fine addition to your kit for a very low price. Stopped down to f/8, it's very sharp and produces images of good quality.

I like my 50 f/1.8. The only down side is it's a little long for indoor shots (like at a party) it's a little long, but other than that it's great and you can't beat the price.

The 50 1.8 would be a great choice, I think you should also take a look at the 85 F/1.8 for sports/portraits.

If $225 or so isn't too much out of your range, I would suggest the 35mm f/2.0 lens. It's very sharp, pretty bright and has a great (read: short) minimum focusing distance. The downside is the somewhat slow/buzzy AF, but that's never bothered me. The images have never disappointed - it's one of Canon's most underrated lenses!
