Pulled a complete 180 there! The 17-40 is a great lens and I suspect the 580 is an awesome flash (I have the 430), this should be a great combo for you. Enjoy.

Whoah! Definitely jumped from telephoto to wideangle. Based on that decision I take it you'll mainly be shooting rail sessions? (If the reasoning to the purchase is still for snowboarding shots)

Good choice on lens and flash. Happy shooting!

The IS won't help capture fast motion.

At long focal lengths it will. If you want 200 mm on your APS-C and can't make a safe 1/400 sec., IS will make up for some of that.

I just upgraded from 70-200 .28L non IS to IS. But for shooting action in bright conditions I would buy the non IS version. At 1/500th or better IS is useless.

i'm not sure i agree with your last statement but there would no shortage of light for sure.

i'd go non-IS in this case or even f4 but i would also consider what else the lens would be used for if i were willing to spend that much cash.

Snowboarding, watersealed? Is the non-IS or the Sigma water sealed? If not whichever you decide pick up a storm jacket. Just shot last nights football in the pouring rain while all the other cameras were put away.
