From today, I have never seen this bird before. A pair were foraging in the grass near a pond. ID anyone please, I have no idea where to start looking.
Got it I think.... Buff banded Rail :)

I'm a bird newbie..so I'm guessing;
Looks like a Crake. (2nd/3rd guess would be a Knot , or Sandpiper)
An Australian Spotted Crake looks very similar on the back and flanks , but the breast is different.

Nice capture of a Buff-branded Rail (Rallus philippensis), not an uncommon bird but still it's not often seen as they tend to be quite elusive and timid.
