I am looking at getting this lens for doing full body, waist up and head shots. I am wondering what is the distance for getting a couples complete body in it? I was wondering will this lens work for all that or maybe get someting else like 24-70mm ? Thanks

You have no less than two lenses that will shoot at that focal length.

With a bit of imagination, you could set them to 50mm and try for yourself.

OK, with plenty of lighting, you are going to get a very shallow depth of field until about f8, so your current lenses will be just as good - unless you only want about a little bit of each person in focus.

I don't think you need to spend any money at all.

Uhm ... should you buy it ? I think ... no ... and yes !
No, because blue_max is right about depth of field.
Yes, because 50mm 1.4 is a wonderful lens for portraits, very sharp & very good colors. I love it. If you can afford it, go for it !

Shawn,
If you click the link in my signature to download my DOF calculator, it will give you your field of view when you tell it your camera format, focal length and distance.

This might help you narrow things down.
