Have heard nothing but negative things about this lens, but bought it anyways (samples I have seen look good, and reviews are rarely accurate), since I got a bargain basement price on it (from keh.com)

It is the EX 82mm filter version with the HSM (I guess there is another version out there as well).

After screwing around with it, I have been nothing but pleased (and I am EXTREMELY picky when it comes to image quality). It is gloomy out, so I have no way to check for excessive C/A under normal conditions that C/A shows up. But the second it gets sunny and contrasty out, I am going to give it a shot.

I wonder why everyone hates this lense? I hear negative things on here, but I am unable to find any reviews online.

There's no 17-35/2.8 I think, maybe you mean the 17-35/2.8-4.

There are plenty of reviews online:

I haven't used it myself so I can't judge but it seems like it gets rather bad reviews.

So some of the reviews are bad but If you are happy with the lens and the pictures come out looking good - what does it matter what others think?

If you're happy with it, that's all that matters. Some people complain about CA on the Tokina I bought but I haven't seen it as a major issue and I love the lens...

...then there are also people who complain just for the sake of complaining.

this is the sharpest lens i own, more so then my 70-200 and 85 1.8. I love my copy, I lucked out. my only issue is that it can be almost too crisp. canon lens's are a gentle sharp, these are a bit harsher but amazing none the less
here's an example:

I had one up untill a couple of months ago when i got my Canon 10-22.

I always found the images too 'warm' (although I belive a lot of Sigma's suffer from this, some people may like this though...) and slightly soft with poor contrast, particularly when using the larger apertures.

It never really impressed me, bit of a 'boring' lens :-)

The main thing is whether YOU like the images you get from YOURS though...
