Here's a little secret.

You can completely submerse electronics and they'll still work just fine when they're DRY. Key word is dry here - if there's any humidity on the circuit board you could short things out at worst or have at least random errors during operation.

I used to wash off old motherboards in the sink with a soft brush and dishwashing liquid. :D

You could put a lens in a Ziploc(TM) bag with a handful of silica gel packs...

True, but moisture inside a lens can take a long time to dry and can also provide a very hospitable environment for fungus.
Also The moisture, especially if there's other chemicals in the water, doesn't tend to dry clear and usually leaves haze marks.
At the very least, it'll need a cleaning

The silica gel packs are a good idea tho

Absolutely... With optical elements and parts that move (lubricated) it gets tricky fast. Unless it got dunked in distilled water you'll end up with water spots (deposits) and such, plus like you said - the fungus becomes a reality, etc.

Warranty would not have covered it anyway. Do you have homeowners insurance, it might cover it.

This is true...and worth checking in to.

Frankly, I'd be worried about the chlorine in the pool and the long term damage that could be done by the residue. Chlorine is corrosive to most metals and circuits.
