That look's really solid, is it metal or something?

BTW, bit off topic, but I love that style hood with the curves or whatever over the ones that are just round. Is there a word to describe this?

Canon EOS 30D, Sigma 30 1.4, Sigma 10-20, Sigma 105 Macro, 135L, 430ex, Lowepro Mini Trekker AW, Manfrotto 3001pro w/486rc2 and 804rc2 head, Manfrotto 681 w/ 3232 head.

Well it's plastic similar to that of the XT, really sturdy like feeling, plus runbber around where you turn it to zoom, and around the focus ring. Feels really nice. It does have some weight also, but nto bad for being 2.8, I hear the Sigma is quite a bit heavier.

The hood is called a PETAL hood. Usually only on wide-medium telephoto and zoomlenses. I noticed once you get the 70-200 the hood just becomes something like a black cup on the lens. I love this hood as well! Plus most hoods you can screw them in backwards to fit in your bag.

Cool! This is definitley a good starter lens for me, alongside the sigma 75-300 or tamron 75-300 I plan on getting.

Quick question:

What afforderable (aka cheap) wide angle lens have people been pairing with this lens? Be it prime or not.

Well there are only 2 wideangles that are decent from what I know they are the 10-22 Canon, and the Sigma 10-20, but they are $500-$700

I'm looking into the Peleng 8mm fisheye $250

The peleng looks awesome, but it's manual focus, which I don't think I'de be able to deal with :(. I've been spoiled with AF, I know.. LOL.

But MF with small aperture, and being such a wideangle is easy!

My firend's been telling me something about bad copies of this lens, and it is good, as long as you get a good copy. Anybody know what he is talking about? Was there a quality control issue with this lens?

Livinthalife, with the 8mm peleng, is the aperture set, i.e. you can't change it with the camera settings? Also, why would it be so much easier to MF with this lens then another non wide angle higher aperture lens? I'm a little newb so help me out.

the tamron rate of getting a good copy is pretty good...the sigmas where the one to seem to have a higher rate of bad copies

Ah. I see. Buying used from somebody reputable helps too though, right? Well respected members here do not lie about things like bad copies, right?

I haven't heard anythign about bad copies of this lens, so I can't answer that.

The aperture is set on the lens itself, so no the camera can't change it, but you can, but it's all manual. I hear F8-11 and set the focus to infinte is the way to go.

Sorry to go off topic, but what do you mean infinite?

On the manual focus, one direction focuses closer (macro) and the other direction focuses further, I think at the furthest end of focusing, it's infinty...usually the symbol is the sideways "8"
