I bought my 30D from B&H and showed my passport but still had to pay ST. I plan to buy my 70-200 2.8 IS from B&H next month. Please let me know if the ST can be avoided by showing a foreign passport and taking it out of the US.

Thanks

Generally if you walk into the store in the U.S, you have to pay the state/local sales tax. Only if the goods are SHIPPED to an out of state address can the sale be made without the state and local tax levied.

Generally there is no tax rebate similar to VAT refund when buying in many countries that impose VAT. (Canada often has General Sales Tax and Provincial tax, and only the GST is refundable if claimed upon filing for refund.)

Yes this is correct generally you have to pay tax. B&H is a great store and I also buy things there sometimes, but at the same time it's a conveyer. The only way to advoid tax would be to buy lens from a smaller store where you can negotiate directly with owner or order from B&H to you friends address outside of New York

And, better yet, when the stuff is finally imported into your home country, you can legitimately bring it in as USED GOODS due to cgratti's usage, and you save yourself some taxes bringing into the country!

I keep seeing PSAUG and the reference to better pricing. What is that? Someone once just gave me a link to BH and I did not understand what they were pointing me to. Are you getting better pricing and if so can anyone take advantage of this? and how?

OK I read the thread and lots of references to it and I gather it is a discount but but how is it used? where? when do you enter this code? I can't find this info anywhere.

Go to B&H, search for PSAUG, and the products that will turn up have that discount pricing.

Thanks Wilt, I will have B&H ship the lens to another state, to save on the Taxes. I wish US had a VAT or GST refund on leaving the country.

Jev, I have had a good experience buying from B&H, I would be a bit wary buying from a small store in case something went wrong and needed support.

I notice Bombay is your location...for information of those outside of U.S., B&H will not ship to a hotel.

Since U.S. practices to not 'mark up' the prices on things like other countries, there is no VAT to 'give back' to visitors! The lowest prices for photographic goods in the world, and you're looking for VAT refund too! ;)

Wilt, I will be staying with family so there should be no problem. I agree US has one of the lowest prices, thats the reason i buy my stuff here.
