I accidently "bumped" my 30D today just moving it on a table, but it was enough impact to jam the lens cover into the UV filter and break the glass filter. (It was kind of an awful sound hearing something rattling around when moving the camera, but at least the noise just came from glass trapped behind the lens cap.) I took a few quick pictures, and I don't think I did anything to hurt the camera or lens (17-85 IS), but is there any way to check it to be sure?

Good thing for UV Filters. Best I could suggest is to take some snapshots using center focus point only and make sure that area is in focus. If in doubt, take it to a local camera shop to check it out. I hope all is well.

That must have been one hell of a bump!

Well if the filter was off, nothing would have been broken!!

How long before SkipD shows up here and says the OP should have had a lens hood on instead of a UV filter...?

Then he could have had a damaged hood as well :-)

(Oh no... not another hood vs filter debate starting again... )
