Hi all!

With the announcment of the G7, several have complained about the lack of RAW. Just as a curiosity I wanted to survey how many RAWs have you taken out of the total shots of your camera (approximate figures would be ok!, its just for reference)

You can use this form to answer

Camera Model:
Total Number of Pictures taken:
Total Number of RAWs taken:

Or just enter an aproximate porcentage of RAW images vs. Total Images.

Thanks for you input,

---------------
Results of Survey as of September 18th, 2006 (will continue to update frecuently)

Number of Inputs recorded: 39*
RAW Average usage: 51.93% of the time

IMAGE NOT FOUND
IMAGE IS A REDIRECT OR MISSING!
Byte size: ZERO | Content warning: NOT AN IMAGE

Results Analysis:
These graphs show the following:
  • Almost 50% (48%) of the photographers shot in RAW mode 75% of the time or more.
  • Around 35% of the photographers use RAW mode less than 25% of the time.
  • Only 15% of the photographers use RAW between 25% and 75%.
So I believe there are two important conclusions that this survey has shown (considering that these 39 photographers can be thought as a large enough reference):

  1. Half the people in the middle (and upper) segment of photography use RAW as their prefered shooting mode.
  2. People mostly stick to either RAW or JPG format and do not mix a lot between both of them.
A more extensive analysis along with several explanations and a file download can be found here

Interesting survey, Rafa Polit Jr.

G6
98% taken in RAW
(occasionally use jpeg when card space is low or if I'm shooting Super Macro)

Canon S70 and 20D, 100% taken in RAW, 20,000 between the two. I'd like a replacement to the S70 that takes RAW. S80 wasn't it and looks like G7 isn't either. Hopefully an S90 is right around the corner.

The G7! thread is growing fast, perhaps I will say something about my RAW experience there. By now, instead of a phone call or an email to my son, I will fill my form in an open post as requested:

I counted my archived original photo files during the year 2005:

Camera Model: powershot Pro1
Total Number of Pictures taken: 3062
Total Number of RAWs taken: 575 (approx. 20%)

Many Gx/Pro1 users said: I ALWAYS shot RAW
A lot of other users said: I NEVER shot RAW

When I know it will take a lot of post-processing and mainly in LOW LIGHT ENVIRONMENTS, I shot in RAW.

RAW processing has a lot of advantages that I will not discuss here and it demands more time than normal good originals in jpg format.

I found recently that if my first action over the original jpg file is Image>Mode>16bit/channel (PhotoShop), then the correction process goes as smooth as with 16 bit tiff files from the RAW converter.

Camera - G3
# Pictures - 3000+
# Raw - maybe a dozen

The few times I shot raw I didn't like the results so I just keep shooting jpegs.

Camera Model: Canon 20D
Total Number of Pictures taken: 3600
Total Number of RAWs taken: 3580 (99%)

I only use JPEG to take some shot's of the blue sky in order to see if my sensor is clean.
