Ok before you jump on my about how crappy this lens is just know that I am very new to photography and I just bought new gear so I can't really afford anything else :). I was just wondering if this is a good price. Best Buy is selling it for $234.99.

It's generally unde $200 if you buy it from a reputable place online.
Get the Sigma 70-300 APO DG macro. About same price and optically better.

Alright thanks a lot for the advice! I just wanted a larger zoom over the kit lens (18-55) that came with the camera. But I trust you a lot more than I trust myself :) so I guess if you say its optically better then that is the one I should be looking at.

Certainly is better than the EF75-300mm, also a tad cheaper in most places. It also has 1:2 macro, a great place to start for close-ups of flowers and other things. The Canon EF100-300 USM is a ok lens also but I think it costs a little more. I'm sure if your just starting out you should be quite happy with the Sigma 70-300 APO, just make certain it's the APO model !

A friend of mine has this lens and was very happy withit until he slapped my Sigma on his 20D. Then all I heard was "Dude, I want this lens." haha

Alright great! Thanks for the advice everyone, I will definitely go with the Sigma then. Because I know with my G6 I did do a lot of macro shooting so it will come in handy. But I do have one question about that. Is there like some sort of switch on the lens for when your shooting macro?

And thanks for posting that link, I'm really glad I didn't pick the one up from Best Buy. That it a fairly big price difference.

This lens has 2 models - USM ($189.95) and non-USM ($159.95)

AFAIK, the USM one features micro-USM instead of the ring-type, and hence you wont get full time MF, and the advantage over the non-USM model is marginal.

Talking about the IQ... its a debatable issue. It depends on whether you get a good copy or a lemon. A while ago there was a thread that people post their photos taken with this lens. Search for it and you may find interesting results.

So I'm guessing the one at Best Buy doesn't have USM? So is this lens inferior to the one with USM?

Here is the link to the one at Best Buy:

You are right. The pic shows a non USM model, at the price of 234.99...

The USM one has a gold color ring near the lens front end, spelling
>>>>>>>ULTRASONIC>>>>>>>>>>

Optically the USM and non-USM model are identical. You get minor advantage in AF speed with the USM model.

Not a bad lens for the money.
In relatively skilled hands it can sometimes get better results than 20x more expensive 300 f/2.8 in less experienced hands.
Both of these shots were taken unsupported, minimal post processing, (240 m@1/150 (INVALID EMAIL) sec and 300 m@1/500 (INVALID EMAIL) sec).
The camera was 20d.

Ok yeah that's is what I figured. Thanks a bunch for your help. I will definitely not be getting it from there.

Wow those are really nice shots!!! Now I am not quite sure which one I want between the Canon and the Sigma. I kinda wanted to stick to the Canon brand but I guess that's just silly. I don't know now what to do. I guess I will just keep researching and reading here over the next day or so and then make my decision.

CobaltSS,
I like to stick to Canon lenses on Canon cameras.
Here are a few shots I have online taken with my old 10D and my old 75-300 f/4-5.6

This photo is printed at a size of 13" x 19" and is great :)

Like I said, its not bad for the cost :D Oh and B&H is one of the best locations for photo equipment either online or in the store (to me) :)
