Yeah I have to agree John B. that even though I am new to photography I would like to stick to all Canon just because I truely have faith in their products. Ever since I got a G6 I have been hooked. Ok then I guess I really owe it to myself to try the Canon one. I will be putting in the order today from B&H and when I get it I will post some shots I take with it. Thanks everyone for your help.

The Canon EF 75-300mm III USM can be had from Amazon for $170.59. Apparently they don't stock many - I placed an order that they don't expect to ship for 2 weeks - but that is a good price; in fact, the best I've seen for that lens.

i had the 75-300 USM III for two weeks. Apart from the quieter AF, the Sigma kicks it's rear elements easily. Make sure it's the APO version (with the red line). Better construction, 3 SLD glass, Macro, bag and even a hood!

Another vote in favour of the much-maligned Canon. Maybe I've just got an unusually good copy? The Sigma is a fine lens, but it seems to me to wash colours out and give things a strange jaundiced cast which, being colour blind, I can't get rid of very effectively. In any case, and the Canon managed this, which I was fairly happy with:

I mean... obviously it's not the sharpest lens in the world, but I don't think it's as soft as people make it out to be (that shot is @ 300mm, and it's not like you can't make out what kind of bird it is), and the autofocus is much better than the Sigmas I've tried; quicker and quieter than the Sigma equivalent(s). And I think it looks better as well, which is obviously very important also :)

This lens has 2 models - USM ($189.95) and non-USM ($159.95)

3 models total............They had an IS version.

IS version replaced with 70-300 IS.......

Was a great lens...........Just sold it!

This was @ 300mm

I have the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro. I love it! For less than 200.00 it does fine. Here are a few shots. All captured with a 20D.

WOW! It is clear that the Sigma is a level above the Canon in IQ. How did you do the dragon fly shot?! that's amazing! You could've said it's shot with a macro L lens and people would've believed it. Nice.

So I'm guessing the one at Best Buy doesn't have USM? So is this lens inferior to the one with USM?

Here is the link to the one at Best Buy:

http://www.bestbuy.com …00050023&id=1051806943002 (external link)

I would not rely on pictures at all. It is quite possible that they didn't know the difference and used a picture of a more expensive model. Make sure, by model number or confirmation from them that it is USM, the one you want.

I would try B&H before Best Buy.

Jim

U need to read the box/lens.

If it is USM it will say USM or have the "U" symbol on it.

Non USM's use a micro motor and is slower and louder than a USM model.

U get what you pay for...............

Does this mean U will get worse image quality? No, opticaly these two should be the same.

In all fairness I got some okay shots with mine.. But, I traded it up for the 70-200 f4.0L.. and did not make my money back.. actually 'sold' it to my cousin for 175.. which she will pay me whenever she gets around to it.. But, like you mentioned your a newbie and probably won't mind some of it's not soo great qualities.. my loves it, and it never leaves her camera.. I let it sit in my bag for six months and maybe used it half a dozen times.. But, camera gear is expensive even more so when your buying equipment you will more than likely upgrade from and it's not gear that retains value..

Light is the key to this lens...mine performs fine in good light, but not accaptable when things begin to dim...
