While there is a difference (exchange rate) between $1000 and 1000GBP, with all the extra taxes and duties on the equipment, there isn't so much of a difference between what you can buy in the US for $1000 and what you can get there for 1000GBP.

Thanks Cyberdyne I think you have spelt it out as clear as it is gonna get and cheers Ronald you have summed it up (and thanks everyone else for your replies).

I guess I really want the 400 f2.8 but I can't afford it at the mo. it is about sacrific and I think the bottom line is I don't want to sacrific IQ, so it is either speed or length..... hmmmm the 400 f5.6 is still looking likt the solution in my case.... but I guess I was hoping that some one might tell me that there is a Leica 400mm f2.8 that is just as good as the L but for £800 ;-)a.... or maybe a long lost sigma that 400mm that is f2.8 but you can pick them up for £100 off ebay ;-)a

I am still not decided and would love to see shots of the releative contenders for comparison, but I know that I am not gonna get the 2.8 IQ with anything else.... will have to keep my eyes peeled on ebay for a bargin ;-)a

Sometimes it is best to simplify your options: if 400 f/2.8 is not in the budget then go down a notch to the 400 f/5.6 which is a super lens indeed for the money.

You could not handhold the f/2.8 anyways. You could hold the f/5.6 all day, if you wish.
For high speed sports that IS would not help you much either.
