I just got my first prime today a 50 f/1.4, i love it already really makes you think about composition and DOF, but at the same time IQ is better, and low light is better (than zooms). I'm not usually a portrait person but on a crop body it seems to lend itself to this and i'm sure i'll try this a lot more. I'm off to Prague tomorrow so i'm sure i'll have more to say about it when i come home. Here's to primes and may my bag conatin more in the future

If you don't have a prime get one they really make you think more about your photography ;) (i'm stating the obvious and probably preaching to the converted but meh)

I am ordering the same lens this weekend. I am looking forward to trying it out. It will be my first prime. :) Post some pics when you get them.

My wife gave me my 50mm f1.4 for Christmas a few years ago (it only took a few hints and call to my photo store to make sure she got the right one :) ). It's a great little lens, and I use it a lot indoors.

My 50mm gets used in the dining room, the 85 sees use on the beach for bokeh'ing out swim buoys, the 300 gets used for seeing windsurfers and people out swimming.

I work in windy, sandy beach conditions and have no fear of using primes and switching often. I get little boogers and love it.

That being said my 70-200 gets the most usage.

My only beef is that the 85 and 50 colour is a little disappointing. Needs a little boost in PP.

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional
Full frame and some primes.

The first lens I bought after joining the forum was the 50 1.4. That was the beginning of my lens addiction. Great lens.

Col_M,
I'm currently working in Prague and have been here for about a month and have been coming here for more than a year.
What are you bringing? There are numerous open space squares and many very narrow, tight streets. Many opportunities for wide-angle to normal vista shots, but also tons of detail to focus in on. Fascinating, photogenic city.

I'm hoping to find somebody who'll sell me a nifty fifty. It's just so sharp for the price it's ridiculous. I plan to use it for everything, portraits, flowers, scenerey, anything that 50mm will do okay for in whatever situation I'm in.

It's always on mine. For shooting certain things (including fashion) I'd sure like an 85mm. I'm very close to ordering an f/1.8 version.

the 85mm range is great. i've always wanted a 85L but just never could justify the expense for a single prime lens like that. The 85 1.8 get's great reviews. I picked up a 85mm nikon AF 1.4 just the other day for my d200. i tried it in AV mode on the 5d and was blown away! unbelievable.

When I upgraded to my 50/1.4 (from my 50/1.8 MKI), I really loved that amazing lens ... never left the camera.

However ... a bit later I got the Sigma 30/1.4 EX that's about as good ... but the focal length is even more versatile for me ... now that lens never seems to leave my camera. Warning ... don't try out that lens

Best regards,
Andy

Yes i agree a good 30mm range is great to have. The 35L is too much for me currently but on my list. I've been eyeing that 30 1.4 siggy. How do you rate that?
