Hello everyone, Im new at this forum and new in photography but having a blast. My question is, does anyone have or know anything about a canon lense EF70-210 w/ macro. Ive read this is the poor mans 70-200 but would like some feeback from some of you on your thoughts. I cant really afford the expensive stuff yet and was wondering if this is a good alternative. Thank you for any feedback you could give me.

Ben

I can't recall anything like this in the EF mount. In the FD mount there were a couple of good lenses at this focal length - one by Canon and the Vivitar Series 1.

its the ef 70-210mm f/4 macro.

it uses an af-d motor which means that it is slow compared to the current batch of usm lenses. optics wise, i've heard that its about 80-90% of the ef 70-200mm f/4 L.

regarding your question as an alternative, it depends a bit on the price that you're going to pay. cause you may well get other excellent alternatives.

The lens you are talking about is real old.....

It was first released in May 1987......

A better option would be the EF70-210mmf3.5-f4.5USM
More reliable, faster focussing.
Its also said that this len's IQ matches that of the 70-200f4, but I havent tried that out so I cant confirm. But this is quite an old edition too.

If you can find a 70-210 USM for a good price, get it. It's a good lens and the AF is really fast.

It was my first telephoto lens and I loved it. Sold it and got the Sigma 70-200 but sometime I miss the light weight of it for traveling.

i've owned all three lenses. the 70-210f4 is okay but slow. it has a good "macro" feature that i liked.

the 70-210f3.5-4.5 is compact and has ring USM. the IQ is very good but it does not match the L lens.

i went through some old pics the other night and i was amazed at just how good the f3.5-f4.5 was tho. great little lens that i probably never should have sold.

I bought the 70-210 off of Fred Miranda's B&S forum. I have seen them available here as well. Also check local shops for used gear. Thanks for the comment about the pics.

I sold mine for $165 too. There was one listed here a while ago but no taker. If you search the B&S forum and get his name, maybe he still has it :)

The 70-210 f4 Macro is basicly a KIT lens. Same crappy build and focus with slightly below average image quality.

Go for the f3.5-4.5 USM like said above.

60D, Canon 18-135 IS, Sigma 10-20 hsm, 24-70 2.8 hsm, 70-200 2.8 hsm, 430EX II, and all the other stuff that goes along with it.

so which ef 70-210mm lens is better? the constant f/4 or the usm f/3.5-4.5?
i asked a question a couple of months ago while choosing which one to go for. but i didn't really get any replies. eventually i just jumped on the f/3.5-4.5 because i was biased towards the usm motor and because i could share the hood.

the f/3.5-4.5 is a much better lens. it's compact, has ring USM and great IQ. the F4 has okay IQ, a crappy slow motor and is push/pull.

but the F4 can be had pretty cheaply....i got one for under $50 off of ebay to mess around with.

if you can find a clean copy of the f3.5-f4.5 for, say, $150, that's a hell of a deal.

If you get the 70-210 f3.5-4.5 look for the one with the word MACRO on the barrel or the MK II version. The original version had a yeallow flower on the barrel and only had 5 aperture blades. The newer versions have 7 Blades and much better out of focus bluring at large apertures (boker of what ever its called).

Please compleatly dissregaurd the above!!!!!!!!!!!!

hmmm. is there such a thing as Mk I and Mk II for the ef 70-210mm f/3.5-4.5? i don't think i've ever heard of such a thing. rather, i think you got confused with the ef 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 which has Mk I and Mk II versions with 5 and 7 aperture blades respectively.

and its bokeh. :)
