Below are two "snaps" taken of my dog Ginger. At first glance, they appear to be underexposed by at least 1/2 stop. However, if I ever so slightly begin to increase the levels, there appears to be some loss of detail in the dog's bone.
Would you consider these pictures properly exposed?

Do you think a flash calibration is in order here?

Here's a raw file and also downsized jpegs.
Completely untouched. Shot raw in normal settings. 24-85 Canon lens

Anthony,

I am by no means expert with flash myself, but I would say your doggie looks a touch underdone. :)

One thing I found helped me when "background" areas were dark was to use 2nd curtain sync (CF8). Might be worth a try.
