After a few days of trying to get up close to my favourite all time bird I perfected my method. Equipped with a mask & snorkel and my Canon Ixus in a underwater housing I used to dive under a good distance away from the birds and then as smoothly as I could I'd emerge as close as I dare, quickly taking a shot before the birds paddled quickly away. Ended up spending lots of time in the water which resulted in 3 or 4 decent results, this being my favourite from the series. Luckily the Pelicans in the Shark Bay area on Australia's western coast were quite used to snorkelers :)

I'd say your method paid of with a great and unusual angle of the pelican. I love it. Nice shot!

Nice shot Paul. Bit game though. I have seen these Pelicans actualy come up and bite people on the backside when I lived up on the Murray River. And that hooked beak can remove a nice lump of skin!

Absolutely love it. Great perspective. Love the colors. even the way the two beaks "almost touch" really makes for a great composition!

nice job.
