You look like Tom Hanks!

You're not the first person to mention the similarity, although I personally can't see it. However, if enough people do, then it must be so.

This is a very interesting (self) portrait, Paul. Do you mind sharing your editing methods?

I was using a "Grunge Effect" action that I downloaded from http://www.atncentral.com (external link), although there seem to be quite a few others around if you do a search. I am still playing with these actions, changing values to discover the effect

After applying the action, I did some general sharpening and some further selective sharpening (mostly to the eyes). This was followed by some dodging and burning to emphasise facial lines and creases. I then cropped it and changed from portrait to landscape format.

Here is the original, just resized, to show the effect of the editing:

I hope that this is helpful.

I really really like this one...how did you set it up?

Cheers,

Thanks.

A single 550ex was set up about 6 feet away for me, in front and to the right (you can tell that of course

). I fitted a cardboard tube of about 6 inches over the front of the flash to try to direct the light. I think this had some effect. The flash was set to 1/4 power (i think) and fired using a ST-E2 transmitter on the camera.

The camera was on a tripod about 4 feet away from me - it may have been closer, as I was firing the camera with a cable release held in my left hand. A single focus point was selected to roughly coincide with the anticipated position of my left eye.

I'm not sure if this is the kind of information that you were looking for, but I hope it is of some use.
