I have been sitting on the fence about this lens.....should I send it back on Monday or not.
Ronald S. Jr. already passed his verdict saying the lens was not sharp.:(

Here are two tree shots: Young Rubra "wired" and Hippocastanum "rusted out".

The first one is shot wide open, the second one at f/3.5 or something.

Can anyone really suggest anything based on these image s resized for posting here ? I kinda doubt it, but one never knows.

What is wrong with the shots? look fine to me. Can you show some 100% crops? where was the focus point?

I don't know, dood, there is somehow no WOW factor in the images. Maybe if I put them thru USM ?
Besides, Ronald said the lens was not sharp.
Here is one 100% crop of where the focus is, hope you don't mind a mosquito on the tag.

Ok first of all don't take everything Ronald says as gospel. Second, it's not a magical L prime so you'll have to post process in some wow factor. The bokeh alone shows a lot of potential...and that lens is sharp.

Subject matter is a pretty big factor in the "wow" as well. No matter how good the lens, test shots don't take my breath away.

Thank you CDI, I am perhaps comparing the 100 f/2.0 too much to the 85 f/1.8.
Today I'll run a comparison shoot with the EF 100 f/2.8.

If I were you I'd go shoot something of importance. A portrait, bird, something...anything. Run a little USM for haze, USM for sharpen, and you might be surprised.

Not all lenses are created equal...even good ones.

I never said the lens wasn't sharp. I said that shot they posted in the other thread wasn't sharp. God.

Quote and address the OP, not me. I was responding to OP's concerns based on what OP stated.

OK, fair enough, take another look at this crop if you will, what is your verdict now ?

Yeah, that shot is sharp, lensview. For a 100% crop, it's quite good.

Here's a touchup: (if you mind, I'll delete it)

OK, thank you Ron, I do not mind at all the touchup..... as I said, I generally never process shots which are used for lens evaluation.:D
I also did not state the obvious perhaps....we are looking not only at peripheral resolving power but also focusing with a low precision AF point, not the center cross csensor (20D).

Neither would I, but my shots end up being PP'd anyhow. Few shots would look breath taking without even minimal PP (including sharpness). I determine absolute sharpness on how it looks after USM. However, I'll admit that I've gotten shots from a couple of my lenses (mainly the 400 5.6L and the 35 1.4L) that looked too sharp after USM. Things happen.

There is one lens feature I have no qualms about......CA seems to be controlled reasonably well.
Here is my test shot, the lens is wide open....yes, there is some purple fringing but this is a tough test and a few much more expensive lenses I have would have painted that leaping jag sculpture purple.
