This is one of my favourite places - and not just because of the great photography. I've been trying for a couple of years to capture a shot that really shows the magic of the stones - I think I am getting there. Thoughts?

Wonderful lighting, I'd say you are definitely "getting there!"

Great shot, love the lighting.
It's always cloudy when I go, which gives it a nice moody feel, but will definately have to get up early and try a morning shot.

Perfect lighting and colors. The vapor trails really add to the vastness of the image, I like it alot.

Nice shot. Though I am not sure if I like the vapor trails - yea, I know you could not do much about them:D.

Thanks :) It is definitly worth it - keep an eye on the weather too because if you time it right you can get a stunning dawn at the stones and still see some mist in the valleys around derwent water. I got up for dawn three times last week and two were incredibly cloudy - that's the lakes!

The vapour trails could go either way for me. Overall I think they add nmuch needed detail into the sky (And I doubt air traffic control would take kindly to me asking them to hold the flights for a few hours :D )

THanks again everyone

I think the trails in the sky really make the scene magical like you were hoping for , with that lovely cloud formation there also
I love the light and shadows all around on the ground as well as on the stones

Excellent! You got the exposure and the ND grad position just right. :)

BUT ............ where are all the other photographers? The last time I was there at dawn there were 8 and I had to ditch two nice wide shots because I hadn't noticed there were a couple of tripods in the shot! Did you ritually slaughter them?

Thanks Mike

There were three other photographers there - it was a friday morning so I assume many people had to work!
One was flitting round the circle like they were on speed. Shot - move - shot - move - shot - move - shot - leave ... and then the sun came up. I couldn't believe they left before the best light even got there! Then again all the motion so early was making me dizzy!

The other two were a nice couple and I was able to work with them so we made sure we stayed out of each others shots. Although they did think I was nuts when I tried some of the real low down shots where I had to lay down to frame it!

Very good shot there. Only thing I'd suggest is getting up higher so you can see the real shape of the circle and get a good perspective on the shadows cast by the stones.
