I just got my new ef24-70. I am very disappointed with the quality of the pic i shot with it. So disappointed that I have use it to compare the EF 18-55 which comes with my 30D. I compared at 50mm with f5 and f10 and all pictures took on a tripod. When I looked at the pictures at computer, I could not see the difference if I did not looked at the file name. They are identica, at least to me.

Anyone has any idea why this 12 times expensive, much larger and heavier lens produce the similar quanlity as the much cheaper, smaller and lighter lens?

Have I got a wrong sample of 24-70?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum, mr_sub.

Don't mean to sound rude, but if those two lenses produced identical results, you probably did something very wrong, which isn't uncommon with any photographer. The lens is a wonderful piece of gear, and when used properly, yields some quite stunning results. Post those two shots, if you will, and we'll give some critique. Click "go advanced" under your post, click the paper clip in the toolbar, and add your shots. Or, link from an outside hosting service by clicking the mountains in the toolbad and inserting the link to the shot. Keep them under 800 pixels on the longest side, and under 100k if you're attaching. Let's see 'em! :-)

Bologna. It's known for being excellent. There's a reason countless pros use this lens on a daily basis. I wouldn't trade mine for any other.

Well I wouldn't trade one for another...that'd be silly. If there were another lens I wanted at the moment, I'd give it up temporarily, but it'd always come back to me. It's one lens I don't care to be without. Now that I think of it, I've come to enjoy it too much on FF. I wouldn't trade it.

i agree ronald but you also have to agree the 24-70 seems to be the most plagued lens in canons range, i know a few people with it who love it and produce amazing shots but i also know a few people personally and alot on here who have issues with it.

User error is the only issue. I've never seen one have to be sent to Canon because it's screwed up. Some need to be calibrated to attain optimum results, but that's the case with most any lens. Plagued? Hardly. 24-105L for flare, 70-300IS for portrait softness, DO lenses for their onion effect, and many others. Never heard of a common problem with the 24-70L.

Remember, too, that most people, especially beginners, aren't going to magically take the lens out of the box and instantly take magnificent shots with it. You have to practice and learn the lens.

Photography threads are worthless without pictures.(He, he)
I'd suggest you shoot 3 AA battery cells staggered, at f/2.8, close up. Focus on the center one with the center AF sensor, etc...etc...I suppose you know the test.
Then post a 100% crop and we'll tell you what we see.

I found the 2 copies of this lens that I tryed were not as sharp at f2.8 as my 16-35 f2.8L, By far. On the other hand my experience with the 17-55 f2.8 s, has provided me with the resuts I expected from the 24-70. I returned each 24-70 within the time allowed for full credit from my store. I have seen many pictures from others 24 -70 f2.8L that are excellent. I dream of having a good copy of that lens, but am relluctant to try again. The Tamron 28-75 f2.8 provided me with the range with as good of results as the more expensive lenses that I had, at a lot less cost, not as nice a build or quick but worked. I use the 17-55 f2.8s most of the time now for the range it covers. Thus rarely get the Tamron on now. :)
