User error is the only issue. I've never seen one have to be sent to Canon because it's screwed up. Some need to be calibrated to attain optimum results, but that's the case with most any lens. Plagued? Hardly. 24-105L for flare, 70-300IS for portrait softness, DO lenses for their onion effect, and many others. Never heard of a common problem with the 24-70L.

Remember, too, that most people, especially beginners, aren't going to magically take the lens out of the box and instantly take magnificent shots with it. You have to practice and learn the lens.

well the people i know personally who had issues are professionals shooting for almost 50 years combined featured photogs and the only canon lens they have had issues with is the 24-70 so i find it hard to believe its a coincident nor user error with their expertise.

i do agree alot of issues are user error but its not all user error and user error is across the board with all lenses/camera gear.

anyway back on topic i will be interested to see the examples.

The lens does get a lot of bad press:evil:but I do love mine:D

IMHO, the lens gets lots of ppl saying its crap, who post up saying its crap, who then get asked to post up examples of why its crap, then get told how to use it/bad copy/take pictures/etc, then post up saying how good it is.

It's not beyond the realms of possibility that the guys has a bad copy. Stuff happens.

I suppose you meant "like many other lenses" or something to that effect ?. However, if you meant the 24-70 required a special sort of practice and expertise development, then we can try to debate that one if you wish.:D

Your assumption is correct. I meant that you have to learn to shoot with any lens. I would never expect to be able to pick up a new lens unlike any other I'd owned and take great shots with it. Most lenses have their own character..this, being one of them.

Bologna. It's known for being excellent. There's a reason countless pros use this lens on a daily basis. I wouldn't trade mine for any other.

you'd sell it tho, and i guess when you sold the last 24-70 (your fifth?) and bought the 24-105 that does not qualify as a trade :D .

That was before FF. I've learned the err of my ways. ;-)a Other than rather consistant sharpness, I didn't much like anything about the 24-105. Yes, I'm on my sixth 24-70L now, and hopefully my last. FF has brought out the best in it. Notice how I keep coming back to this one. ;-)a

Ron, next time if and when you decide to use (quote) my posts in your self-promotion campaigns as well as any other material of commercial, pecuniary, and other benefit-accruing value to you, I'd like you to ask for my prior approval.:D

I agree with Ron. I was ready to send my 24-70MM L copy back to Canon last year as it seemed always "soft" to me. That was the easy way out as there was a lot of POTN forum traffic about "good and bad" copies of the 24-70MM L and I was convinced I had a bad one. However, I have come to learn that this lens is tack sharp when used correctly. A year later it is still the same lens but I am not the same photographer :)

Maybe I am lucky but I have bought 9 lenses over the Internet (B+H, J&R, and Sigma4less) and all have performed as advertised IMHO. Not always right away but in the end after a lot of practise...yes!

I just got my new ef24-70. I am very disappointed with the quality of the pic i shot with it. So disappointed that I have use it to compare the EF 18-55 which comes with my 30D. I compared at 50mm with f5 and f10 and all pictures took on a tripod. When I looked at the pictures at computer, I could not see the difference if I did not looked at the file name. They are identica, at least to me.

Anyone has any idea why this 12 times expensive, much larger and heavier lens produce the similar quanlity as the much cheaper, smaller and lighter lens?

Have I got a wrong sample of 24-70?

Thanks

No, you just have the best damn 18-55 Canon ever made! ;)

I got mine earlier this year and posted my first shoots. The color and sharpness were not as nice as I had expected. I sent it to the NJ center and it came back with repairs. I still don't really know if it was the lens or me (being clueless and all). I started doing the standard things, like standing with both feet firm on the ground, holding my arms close to my body, keeping the camera as steady as possible, using a tripod when convenient, etc. My shots became amazingly sharp. Like Jim, it's the lens that's always on my 20D and now is the only lens I take when I'm not shooting an event. I think those of us who have owned the lens for awhile and used it in many situations and love it will always find other lenses not so convenient. When I shoot a wedding, I'm always going to have that lens with me. It's the best one.
