Love the first image. I find the second to be oversharpened and the lighting is very harsh. Thanx for sharing. Always nice looking at your images.

How much do you sharpen you shots, do you unsharp mask or just sharpen in certain areas?

I use USM...but try not to overdo it. Ahemmm....that said...in this case I must admit I used to much on the second shot as tomico rightly pointed out.

You are right about the second image. It was taken under very harsh sunlight and that adds to the effect of the USM...and it is over sharpened. Still I like the pose since the Meadow Pipit has spread its tail and is just about to take off.

C&C are always welcomed.

It seems the general consensus is the first is excellent on all counts and I will have to concur. Gorgeous.
