Forgot to complement you on capturing the "sleeping" Osprey. I doubt though he was actually snoozing. Most raptors including Ospreys have nictitating eyelids which protect their eyes from dirt etc. To get one doing this is a stroke of good luck.

First time I've seen it happened and the second chance I got, I just snapped several frames. I really don't know how to call it other than the obvious, thanks BD for clarifying.

hmm, i dont know weather or not he was sleeping either. but their eyelids are actually quite clear, whereas in that shot the eye is covered by something white. i dont know either way for sure what it is he is doing though.

Reyno.....Very nice shots. They are so sharp and crisp. May I ask what lense you shot those with?

Billginthekeys......What you are seeing is actually a second eylid called a nictitating membrane. It is fairly clear and allows a bird to close it's eyes without loss of vision during the time it is blinking. You caught this bird just at that exact moment in time. :)

I thought the second membrane was actually like a polarizing style lens, which allowed them to cut through water reflection, I noticed the same thing on a GBH pic I have
