Hello All,

I am having a hard time deciding what to get next, it will be my first L series lense and I am choosing between:

17-40 L
24-70 L
70-200 f/2.8 L

I am moving into sports photography and maybe journalism one day.

I am leaning toward the 70-200 f/2.8, I already have the following lenses:

50 f/1.4
28-135IS
75-300IS

All to be used on a 30D

Canon Eos 1D Mark II N | Canon Eos 30D + grip | 50 f/1.4 | 28-135IS | 70-200 f/2.8 L.
I have a terrible case of the L's

Get the 70-200L, and then sell the 28-135 and 75-300 on Ebay to help finance the 24-70L.

you might want to look into the sigma ex 70-200mm f/2.8 since you're not looking to buy an IS version.

My vote...24-105 f4 L gives you better range for photojournalism, I chose the Sigma over the canon 2.8 because IS was not important vs the change in $$. To me 24-70 is great but I liked the range better with the 24-105. The difference between f2.8 and f4 was not large enough ( 1 bump up on ISO or a little pp can change that) . The 17-70 may also work if indoor/tighter spots are encountered.

Eventually, you should also pick up the 85mm f/1.8 for basketball and volleyball. It's the choice for indoor sports where an f/2.8 lens won't cut it.

If you are going to be doing outdoor sports, definitely get the 70-200. If you're going to be doing indoor, you will probably want a fast prime or 2.

get the 70-200 f/2.8 L first....then go rent the 24-70mm

I bought the 24-70mm first and fell in love with the 70-200. I kept both.

I know what a lens is but what is a lense?

For sports the only option is the 70-200 - for photojournalism look at the 24-70. (I have both in my bag - usually have the 24-70 on my camera).

That's the right path. Get the 70-200
