Took my camera to a party this weekend. Never really had done that before cause I don't have a flashgun yet, only the on camera flash (which I detest). Cranked the camera up to 1600ISO and turned on my Image Stabalizer. I'm quite impressed with the results.

The first shot was obviously done without the flash. Tungston light only. I left it the colout balance warm cause it seemed to me that was what the picture wanted. Seemed unatural with "correct" colours.

My buddy complained that I didn't use the flash. I showed him the shot, and he decided that he wanted me to take one with the flash still. The second one is standard "deer in the headlights" shot. He was happier, but I wasn't. :p Funny the difference between what a person that has a passion for photography and person that doesn't wants out an image.

I fully understand your flash/no-flash dilemma. I was at a family birthday party and my step-mom who is learning photography comes over and says "Show me how to set this up so that I don't hafta use flash...) and I show her a coupla things and before you know it she is bangin' away natural light and all. Then toward the end of the event my step-sister gets ahold of the camera and says "Fix it, Fix it, so the flash will work, it looks so much better that way!" So to each their own, one day she'll come around!

I like the first shot, it feels like you war right there enjoying the fun!

Glad you guys like the first shot. Makes me feel less crazy! :P

However as someone told me on another photography. The customer is always right. So if you're taking a photo of someone that wants the flash on might as well use it for them. I'm investing in a 580EX right away, so hopefully I'll get better shots with the ability to do bound flash and FEC. :)
