So I was out at a shoot yesterday on some rocks in the middle of the James River. I put my bag down on a big boulder, and went to change from my 50mm 1.8 that I JUST GOT less than 48 hours ago, to my 70-200. Then there was a whole chain of events. I Knocked over my RedBull, which splashed onto the bottom of my camera. I was so busy with wiping that off, that when I turned around, I knocked my BRAND NEW 50mm lens off the boulder onto the one I was stading on. ~4.5' down. Needless to say, rocks are hard, and the lens is plastic.

Now I have two lenses for the price of one :(

Gutted :( It's a great lens, too..

Still, this is the nature of photography I suppose. Lesson learned for the future, I suppose. Best of luck replacing it, anyway :)

Sorry. That stinks! I'm buying a vest. I've seen people put lenses and other things down on rocks and regreted it. I'm getting a vest so I don't have to put anything down. :)

Go out and have a nice Diet Coke for me.

This tells me all I need to know: I knocked my BRAND NEW 50mm lens off the boulder.

The one thing I always make sure I do, if I'm in an environment like that, is keep positive control of my gear. It's either in my hand or in my bag. Period.

You're fortunate that this was not a more expensive lesson...

Well,

be happy it was not your 70-200...:D

Been there, done that (dropped 20D with 50/1.8 MKI), but the MKI might have been a bit more solid, so no problems apart from a scratch on the magnesium housing of the camera.

Just a question ... did you try to put thost things back into the lens?
I remember that some people had their lens snap in two and snapped it back to no ill effects...

Best regards,
Andy

Sorry about the loss of the 50/1.8. I'm just curious - is your camera OK?

Ouch, ouch, ouch

It almost makes you want to tie lanyards to all your lenses?

An "in the field" lens swap is always a challenge.

Hope you get the replacement soon...

There was another thread about dropped 50mm 1.8 lens fairly recently. One of the replies mentioned the fact that they had merely 'snapped it back together' and suggested the victim of the broken lens try a little bit of that effort to see if theirs would snap back together!

Ouch, that sucks. :(

The only thing I can offer is be glad it was the nifty - the cheapest lens it could've happened to! The 70-200mm would've sucked far, far more.

Yes. As soon as I read the OP, I thought of my vest and how it minimizes the need to set any piece of equipment down on such precarious perches. IMO, for field work, the vest is much more convenient and easy to work out of than backpacks or shoulder bags.
