Where does the Op mention the 85mm ??? - I can only assume they have edited the original post?
For group shots I would not go any wider than about 17mm on a crop body, not unless you want people to look distorted at the edge of the frame...
Obviously there is the Canon 17-40L, 17-85mm IS or the new 17-70mm not to mention some from Sigma... but I'm not sure how much the OP wants to spend?

It really depends on the budget.

I edited my post because I was confused and didn't realize it! LOL I don't want to break the bank, so I am not looking to get the 17-40L. And thanks for the advice.

Hello,

I am in the market for a new lens....I need something wider than what I have. I am needing something to help get good group shots without standing too far back.
Thanks!

The EF 85mm f/1.8 USM lens will provide a field of view that is similar to what you would see with a 135mm lens on your film camera. While it is a fine choice if you need an 85mm lens, you will be dissapointed if you were looking for something wide--on the 20D, this is a medium telephoto lens.

In the same price range, you might consider one of these instead:

Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 USM
Canon EF 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Sigma 20-40mm f/2.8 EX Aspherical DG DF

I have not used the above lenses my self, so I can not comment on their performance. However, I have used the following wide angle lenses and know them to be very good:

Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
Canon EF 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM

Hope this helps.
