There is allot of ways to do this. One is not more right than the other. Just for the fun of it I took a stab at this as well. Used select color range to get just the wet looking fabric and opened the Hue/Saturation dialogue box. After just a few tweaks with the sliders there I ended up with this.

Here's my take on it:

Select > Color Range ...

Click on the darkest region of the stain.

Save that as a channel and deselect. Click the visibility icon to show the mask effects, (might want to double click on the title and change the masking color & opacity, since the usual red blend in with the pink hues in the image.) Tweak the mask by increasing contrast, then filling the white area with pure white, and the black area with pure black. You could also use the threshold tool for this. Load a selection from the resulting mask, and turn the visibility off on the channel.

Back on the layers palette, Create a new adjustment layer for levels. Adjust the levels until the stained area matches the tone of the rest of the dress as closely as possible. With the brush tool, feather the edges of the layer's mask (created by the selection) until the borders of the stain are reasonably invisible. Once it looks like the mask is about right, go back and fine tune the adjustment layer's settings.

I hope that helps :)

(And it looks like I pretty much did what the poster above did... ;))
